The descriptors of wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt define some of the roles that describe Joyce Ann Eby. In these roles and the many other ways that she was involved in serving others, she sought and found the good in each person. Her children described her as a gentle soul, who had a deep well of patience and extended kindness to others. A hard-working and focused student, Joyce paid for her college tuition in her pursuit of achieving degrees in fashion design and psychology. The combination of those degrees allowed her to help women through her work at Heartbeat of Monroe, a crisis pregnancy center in Monroe. Her work with and for the young women who sought support from Heartbeat was, for Joyce, most gratifying. Knowing Joyce’s lifelong interest in and support of education, her husband (Ralph d.) established the Joyce Hoagland Eby Scholarship which continues to provide an avenue for need based, “non-traditional” female students to pursue their education at Monroe County Community College. She also enjoyed teaching knitting and crocheting to junior high students at St. Mary Grade School and shared her sewing expertise by making dresses for neighbors in need, as well as costumes and prom dresses. She was a woman who was faithful to living the Ten Commandments, and attendance at Mass each week. “Her children rise up and praise her; her husband too, extols her” (Proverbs 31:28) is an apt description of her. May the hope of the resurrection bring comfort and consolation to Joyce’s family: her children, Mark, Brian, Paul, Ellen, Bob and Ken, her 18 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and her sister and brother as they mourn her death.
