Joan Marie Raymond served as an obstetrics nurse, welcoming newborns into the world. Her love of children animated her life. Her daughters shared that she loved being a mother and took joy in nurturing her children by frequently holding them and hugging them often. Through her example her children were taught compassion, how to be a listener and how to reverence and cherish her husband, Tom (d. 2010). Joan was faithful to her “prayer time” each day. Prayer pamphlets and her rosary were situated beside the end table next to her favorite chair. Her life was inspirational and encouraging to her children: John, Tom, David, Jim, Kathy, Susan and Mary, as well as her twenty grandchildren and thirty-four great-grandchildren. A woman who appreciated family traditions, Joan had enjoyed trips which she and her sister, Marion Brenton, enjoyed with her mother. Joan, likewise spent time with her three daughters on trips. And the tradition continues as Kathy, Sue and Mary now set aside “one-on-one” time with their daughters. As one who greatly appreciated music, Joan would receive letters from her husband, Tom, while he was serving in the military that all had the title of their favorite song written on them: “Till the end of time”. Throughout their married life, these words could be found on every card or letter exchanged between them. This exchange continues to be a witness to their love and faithfulness St. Mary Parish extends its prayerful support to each member of Joan’s family. May the hope of the resurrection and your many memories shared with your mother, grandmother and great-grandmother comfort and console you in the coming days and months.
