The life of Gerald Patrick Gallagher, a man with diverse talents and interests, was remembered when family and friends gathered for a Memorial Mass on Wednesday, January 13, 2021. His wife, Joyce, chose to place his photo near a wreath, as a symbol of immortality; that, like the wreath, which has no beginning and no end, so too is our life with God. His 17-year career in the Navy provided many opportunities to share his talents. As a seaman, a medic, one who worked with lepers, an X-ray technologist and involvement in Navy intelligence, Gerry’s multiple experiences always formed him for his future work. Following his Navy career, Gerry began his preparation to teach. It was while involved with Student Teaching that he met his future wife, Joyce, who survives him, along with his two sons, Brian (Deborah) and Kevin (Emily). Another son, Michael, is deceased. His teaching career began in Baltimore, where Gerry taught special education before moving to Monroe. He continued his teaching career at the Hall of the Divine Child where he taught social science. His dedication to education was evidenced through his work as a member of the Board of Education at Monroe Public Schools. Gerry heard another call, which he pursued; that of serving as the Monroe County Friend of the Court, where he finished his career as chief mediator. It has been said that Gerry’s work in mediating family disputes helped to resolve and mend differences that led to stronger marriages and united families. Even after retirement, Gerry continued mediating for the court system. The parish community of St. Mary prays with and for all who grieve Gerry’s death. May the hope of the Resurrection comfort and console each of you and bring you his peace.
