Bonnie Bica, age 80 of Monroe, passed away Saturday March 5, 2022 in her home surrounded by her family.
Born July 27, 1941 Bonnie was the daughter of Thomas and Mildred (Corell) McDowell. A graduate of Mackenzie High School she continued her education at Eastern Michigan University where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree. Bonnie married the love of her life, James Bica, on August 1, 1964 at Epiphany Catholic Church in Detroit.
Bonnie was a teacher at Lincoln Elementary before leaving to start her family. Then in 1994 she helped open Beek’s Bar and Grille where she continued to do the bookkeeping for the family business until her retirement in 2005. She was a member of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Monroe Jaycees Auxiliary, the Centennial Garden Club and was a past Girl Scout Leader. Bonnie enjoyed playing Bunko, trips to the casino and traveling to Florida, but her most treasured times were those spent with her family especially attending her grandchildren’s activities.
Bonnie leaves to cherish her memory, James, her husband for the past 57 years; children: Lisa (Ken) Kemmerling, James (Darcy) Bica II and Christopher (Sara) Bica; grandchildren; Rose, Grace, Brooke, Maia, Mara, Blayne and Bennett; her siblings: Barbara Hewison, Thomas (Nora) McDowell and James (Brenda) McDowell and her in-laws Michael Bica and Bernice Bica; as well as many nieces and nephews. Sadly she was preceded in death by her parents; a sister Karen Purcell and in-laws Michael Purcell, Pete Leabo, Josephine Leabo, William Bica, Teresa Bica and Judy Bica.
A celebration of Bonnie’s life has been planned under the direction of the Allore Chapel-Martenson Family of Funeral Homes, 203 E. Elm Ave. Friends may call Wednesday from 2pm until 8pm. Funeral services will be Thursday. She will lie in state from 9:30am until a Mass of Resurrection at 10:30am from St. Mary Catholic Church. Entombment to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
